The delivery of smoking cessation interventions by nurses who smoke: A meta?ethnographic synthesis

Aims To gain new insights into the experiences of nurses who smoke and to understand impact those on their delivery smoking cessation interventions. Design A meta-ethnographic synthesis. Data sources CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, PsychINFO, Web Science grey literature databases were searched from inception April 2019. Review Methods Meta-ethnography was employed synthesize findings included studies. The CASP qualitative checklist used appraise quality each study, GRADE-CERQual approach review findings. synthesis is reported in accordance with eMERGe reporting guidance. Results From an initial search outcome 6,019 citations, 13 studies detailing 195 smokers or ex-smokers. Four main themes identified beliefs, dissonance, coping mechanisms workplace policies. An integrated conceptual map proposed basis Nurses aware tobacco harms role addressing use, which resulted guilt stigma. Workplace policies played a crucial creation cognitive dissonance. different strategies cope dissonance such as rationalizing benefits, hiding behaviour, denial risks, failing engage Some expressed more positive aspirations including willingness quit embrace interventions patients. Conclusion Implementing smoke-free supportive targeting nurses’ may assist them improve engagement practices.
